A Treinta Agosto de 1654
Christian martyrs--Spain
Abelly, Louis, 1604-1691
Vincent de Paul, Saint, 1581-1660
Broadside presenting the case for sainthood of Pedro Borguny Castelló (1628-1654). Pedro Borguny Castelló was a Mallorcan who was enslaved in Algiers after being captured by the Turks while at sea. To avoid being sent to Constantinople, he agreed to renounce his Christianity and become a Muslim. Soon after, he re-embraced his Christianity publicly, and was summarily sentenced to death by burning.
The Vincentian priest and Vicar-Apostolic Jean le Vacher witnessed Borguny Castelló's death and reported it to Saint Vincent, who called the man a martyr.
The text on this broadside is from Louis Abelly's 1664 biography of Saint Vincent. It is a letter Vincent wrote in 1655 describing Borguny Castelló's martyrdom. This broadside was printed in the early 19th century at the behest of the Mallorcan Cardinal Antonio Despuig y Dameto.
