Typed letter from Sr. Helen to Pope John Paul II written in 1997 after he spoke out against the death sentence of Joseph O’Dell. In this letter Sr. Helen points out the way that some death penalty advocates in the United States use the wording in Evangelium Vitae (that the state has a right to execute in cases of “absolute necessity”) to justify seeking the death penalty. Annotation on this page handwritten by Sr. Helen Prejean.
